Names in bold are the setting names you see in the theme editor when your admin is in English. Texts in “quotation marks” are what shoppers see. The path Theme settings › Group › Setting points to the theme settings panel of the editor.

1. Introduction

Lintel is built for stores whose products have a size that matters: furniture, framed art, ceramics, lamps and home training equipment. Measurements are read from your product and variant metafields and shown in words, tables and drawings to scale, in centimeters or inches. Nothing is calculated or made up when the data is missing: the theme simply shows less.

Lintel ships with five presets (styles). They are not colour variations of one layout: each one has its own header, desktop menu panel, mobile menu, product card, card reveal, quick view, cart drawer, cart page, search panel, search results, collection filters, product page layout, footer and motion style.

  • Lintel — furniture and interiors: a shoppable room, a house floor plan, the doorway check on cards, in the quick view and in the cart, and a pocket-door cart drawer.
  • Lucerna — lighting: a light stage that switches a room on, light bands by colour temperature, a dimmer on the product page and a dark cart “shade” that adds up the light of the order.
  • Mantel — ceramics and tableware: a shelf of shapes at their relative heights, test-tile swatches, a gallery grid in two sizes, a bottom-sheet quick view and a stacked cart.
  • Enfilade — art and editions: a split header with an A–Z artist index, museum-label cards, a salon-hang grid, a full-screen viewing room and a numbered catalogue cart.
  • Telamon — home fitness equipment: a fold diptych (in use / stored), occupancy plans to scale, a bottom dock on phones and a floor-plan cart that draws every piece on a 1 m grid.

2. Installation and choosing the preset

2.1 Add the theme

  1. In your Shopify admin, open Online Store › Themes.
  2. Add Lintel to your theme library and choose the preset (style) you want to start from.
  3. The theme is added unpublished. Click Customize to open the theme editor and preview it with your products before you publish.

2.2 Which preset to choose

Preset Best for Catalog words Header Product page
Lintel Furniture, interiors Furniture: piece, finish, room Beam: menu in bays beside the name Views: Piece / In the room / Plan
Lucerna Lamps and lighting Lighting: light, finish, room Search bar: field beside the menu Dimmer stage and rating plate
Mantel Ceramics, tableware Ceramics: piece, glaze, photo Shelf: name above, menu row below Stacked, captioned photos
Enfilade Art, prints, editions Art: artwork, frame, wall Split: menu on both sides of the name Centred work with a two-column label
Telamon Home fitness equipment Fitness: equipment, color, space Dock: search field and segmented menu Two equal columns, then the occupancy plan

Choose the preset whose way of shopping is closest to your catalogue, not only its colours. Every preset uses the same settings, so you can later combine options (for example, Lintel's doorway check with a different card style).

2.3 What each preset installs

Each preset comes with its own home page, product, collection, cart and search templates, header and footer:

  • Lintel — home: Shoppable room, House plan, Featured collection (Title block), Finish in focus, Dimension guide, Finish library, Email signup. Product page adds Finish library, Related products and Recently viewed. Collection: tree side column. Cart page: grouped list with a measurements column. Footer: base band with four columns and units.
  • Lucerna — home: Light stage, Light bands, Featured collection (Lit catalogue table), Image with text (Hanging from a cord), Text columns (Rating plate), Email signup (Night plate). Collection: sticky bar with chips and a lamps off / on switch. Cart page: technical table. Footer: night, guides first and light switch.
  • Mantel — home: Image with text, Form shelf, Featured collection (On planks), Shoppable room, Text columns (Workshop steps), Finish in focus, Questions (Care tags). Collection: shelf that pushes the grid, shape pictograms, alternating sizes. Cart page: tiles in two columns. Footer: care legend first. It also includes a page template with a Dimension guide about diameter, height and capacity.
  • Enfilade — home: Shoppable room, Shop by room, Featured collection (Salon hang), Collection list (Exhibition rooms), Blog posts (Catalogue entries), Email signup (Invitation card). Collection: index column with an alphabetical line and a salon grid. Cart page: numbered list. Footer: colophon, centred. It also includes a second product template for publications, with a shorter list of blocks (no scale view, meter, enquiry or maker).
  • Telamon — home: Fold diptych, Discipline segments, Featured product, Collection list (Floor grid), Questions (Assembly steps), Email signup (Folding ticket). Collection: segments and side panel with a grid / comparison list switch. Cart page: checklist with unit of sale and parcels. Footer: compact with folding columns.

The other templates (blog, article, pages, contact, 404, password, collections list) are shared by all presets.

2.4 Changing preset later

The theme settings of each preset (colours, fonts, card, quick view, cart and search layouts, motion) are saved as a style. Where the theme editor offers you a change of style, it changes these settings; your templates and the sections you have arranged stay as they are. To start from another preset's full home page and templates, add the theme again with that preset.

2.5 First steps checklist

  1. Theme settings › Logo and favicon: upload your logo and favicon.
  2. Theme settings › Vocabulary › Catalog words: choose the words that match what you sell.
  3. Theme settings › Dimensions and finishes: create metafield definitions of type Dimension (Settings › Custom data) and enter their namespace and keys. See 6.1.
  4. Assign your menus in the Header and Footer sections.
  5. Turn on filters in Shopify's Search & Discovery app if you want storefront filtering.
  6. Replace every example text in the home page sections (testimonials and press logos ship with text marked “example”).
  7. Preview on a phone and a desktop before publishing.

3. Global settings

3.1 Colors and color schemes

Theme settings › Colors holds the color schemes. Each scheme has:

  • Background, Background gradient, Surface (technical strips, fields and panels), Text, Headings, Accent and links, Signal and Signal label (room points, counters and selection), Primary button, Primary button label, Secondary button, Lines.
  • Badge colours: Sale badge, Sold out badge, Info badge, each with its label colour.
  • A full set of dark colours for the same roles (see 3.2).

Every preset ships with five schemes. Each section has its own Color scheme setting.

Colors by area sets the scheme of the parts that open over the page: Cart drawer, Quick view, Product cards (a card on another scheme than its section is drawn as a tile), Mega menu, Mobile menu, Search, Filter drawer, Sticky buy bar and Notices (form confirmations).

Keep at least 4.5:1 contrast between text and background, and between accent and background, in both light and dark colours.

3.2 Dark mode

Theme settings › Colors › Dark mode:

  • Off — only the light colours are used.
  • Follow the device — the store uses each scheme's dark colours when the shopper's device is in dark mode.
  • Follow the device, with a switch — the same, plus a switch shoppers can use. Switch position: Header, Footer or Header and footer. Without JavaScript the switch is hidden and the device setting applies.

All five presets ship with the switch on. Several sections accept a night photo that is shown in dark mode (Shoppable room, Current exhibition, Fold diptych) and the Light stage can start lit or unlit depending on the store's colours.

3.3 Typography

Theme settings › Typography:

  • Headings: Font, Heading size (80–130 %), Heading case (As written, Uppercase, Small capitals), Product titles (Normal or Italic; italic applies to cards, product pages, cart, search, rooms and the quick view).
  • Body and interface: Font (used for prices, measurements and controls; a font with tabular figures keeps numbers aligned) and Body size (90–120 %).

Fonts come from the Shopify font library.

3.4 Layout and motion

  • Theme settings › Layout: Page width (1000–1800 px), Space between sections (Compact, Regular, Generous), Button style (Squared, Soft, Rounded, Ruled, Block) and Button corners, Field style (Boxed, Underline, Filled), Keyboard focus (Ring, Ring with gap, Underline and outline), Image corners, Panel, field and drawer corners, Product gallery images (Automatic or Always whole).
  • Theme settings › Motion: Motion style (Threshold, Ignite, Settle, Hush, Hinge), Motion speed (70–130 %), Smooth page transitions, Reveal sections while scrolling and Preload pages on intent (cart, checkout and account links are never preloaded). Nothing moves when the shopper's device asks for reduced motion.

3.5 Header

The Header section (header group) has:

  • Menu and Customer account menu (the links of the sheet opened by the account icon).
  • Bar › Layout: Beam, Search bar, Shelf, Split or Dock. Logo position on desktop (Beam only), Search, account and cart as Icons or Words, Search entry (button that opens a panel, field that widens over the menu, or field always shown), Search field hint, While scrolling (shrink the bar, keep it visible, keep only the second row, hide on scroll down and show on scroll up, or scroll away) and Line of text (shown by the Split layout).
  • Menu promotion blocks: an image, heading, text and link shown in the panel of one top-level menu item, or in every panel.

The logo is set in Theme settings › Logo and favicon (Logo, Logo width 60–320 px, Favicon). The Announcement bar section sits above the header, with one or more Announcement blocks (text and link).

3.6 Menus

  • Desktop menu panel (Header › Menus): Floor plan with “In this room”, Pendant row, Shelf of pieces, A–Z index with preview or Columns filtered by segment. Index order applies to the A–Z index. Show images in menus uses collection images for menu items that link to collections.
  • Mobile menu: Levels with breadcrumb, Blind from the top, Bottom sheet, Full-screen index or Bottom dock with cart summary. It is used below 990 px and on desktop when the menu does not fit. Catalog label names the catalog tab of the dock.
  • Show country and language in the mobile menu and Country and language in the bar: selectors appear only when Shopify Markets offers more than one option.

The Footer section has Layout (Base band with four columns and units, Night: guides first and light switch, Care legend first, Colophon centred, Compact with folding columns), Show «Back to top», Show country and language selectors, Show Follow on Shop (requires Shop Pay), Show payment icons, Show policy links and Color scheme. Blocks: Brand, Menu, Text, Guides (latest articles of a blog), Care legend (dishwasher, microwave and oven marks with your own text), Makers index and Email signup.

Social links are entered in Theme settings › Social media (Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn).

3.8 Cart

Theme settings › Cart:

  • Cart type: Drawer or Page. Cart drawer layout: Pocket door, Dark shade under the header, Stack anchored to the cart icon, Full-screen numbered list or Floor plan with every piece to scale. Every layout keeps the same lines, discounts, note and checkout; the cart page works without JavaScript.
  • Group cart drawer lines by (nothing, product type or vendor), Allow order notes, Show measurements in the cart.
  • Show complementary products in the cart drawer (from Shopify's complementary products, set in the Search & Discovery app) and Collection when there are no recommendations.
  • Free shipping threshold and up to three rewards (Reward 1–3 · amount and · text): the bar only counts; the discounts or gifts themselves are set up in Shopify.
  • Show a shipping estimate in the cart (country, state and postal code; an estimate from your shipping rates) and Delivery conditions link.
  • Ask to accept the terms before checkout and Terms page.
  • Offer a service in the cart, Service name, Price note and Service product (optional): a checkbox saved with the order as a cart attribute, optionally adding a service product with its own price.
  • Collection for the empty cart link.

Discount codes are entered at Shopify checkout. Automatic discounts and discounts already applied are shown in the cart, per line and for the whole order.

Theme settings › Search: Show suggestions while typing, Search layout (Panel under the header with collection cards, Technical rows under the field, Shelf, Catalogue raisonné in one column, Footprint comparator), Shortcuts menu, Popular searches, Featured collection (up to four products before anything is typed), Show price in suggestions and Show vendor in suggestions.

3.10 Other global settings

  • Product cards: image shape and fit, Card style (Plate with title block, Technical strip, Rounded tile, Museum label, Plan with unit of sale), Card reveal, Doorway width, badges, room photo on hover, dimensions, Card detail, rating, swatches, quick view and quick add options, Personalization metafield, vendor and Collection grid rhythm. See 6.2 and 6.3.
  • Dimensions and finishes, Pieces and Product details: the metafields the theme reads. See 6.1.
  • Currency format › Show currency codes.
  • Vocabulary › Catalog words: Furniture, Art, Ceramics, Fitness, Lighting or General. These words are used in search, collections, cards, rooms and the 404 page; your own headings stay as you write them.

5.3 Blog and articles

The Blog section shows articles per page (3–24). The Article section has Show author; it shows the article's tags and, when comments are enabled for the blog, the comments and the comment form.

5.4 Pages

The Page section shows the page content. The contact page template adds the Contact form section. You can add any section to page templates.

5.5 404 page

The 404 page section shows a message, a search field and an optional decorative Image (for example an empty doorway). Its words follow Catalog words.

5.6 Search, cart, password and gift card

  • Search results: results per page, Results layout (Grid with a rooms column, Technical table with a grid view, Gallery in two sizes, Catalogue raisonné, Footprint comparator), filtering and sorting.
  • Cart: Layout (Grouped list with a measurements column, Technical table, Tiles in two columns, Numbered list, Checklist with unit of sale and parcels), Group lines by, empty cart image and links, Conditions link (numbered list) and Parcels metafield (checklist).
  • Password page: heading, an email signup form and the password form.
  • Gift card: the card's value, code, QR code, an Apple Wallet link where Shopify provides one, and a print option.

6. Theme-specific features

6.1 Measurements, finishes and pieces (metafields)

  • Dimensions: width, depth, height and optional diameter, minimum and maximum drop, read from metafields of type Dimension on the variant first, then the product. Set the namespace and keys in Theme settings › Dimensions and finishes (defaults: custom.width, custom.depth, custom.height, custom.diameter, custom.drop_min, custom.drop_max).
  • Second set of measurements (for example folded or stored) with the prefix stored_ by default, plus stored_label and stored_note.
  • Dimension drawing key: a file metafield with each product's measured drawing, added to the gallery.
  • Show measurements in the entered unit, centimeters or inches, and Let shoppers switch between cm and in.
  • Finish option names, Swatches (swatch only or pill with name and colour), Swatch shape (circle or test tile, with Clay color of the tile). Swatches follow the swatch data set on product options in Shopify.
  • Pieces: one of a kind, series status (open or closed), set size, a note, series photos and what varies in the series.
  • Unit of sale metafield (custom.sold_as by default): what the price covers, shown by the price, in the quick view, the cart and search.

6.2 Doorway check

“Fits a doorway?” compares a piece's smallest section with a standard door (203 cm high; width set in Doorway width, 70–100 cm) and gives the verdict in words, such as “Fits a doorway of 80 cm, 12 cm to spare” or “Needs a wider door (92 cm)”. It appears:

  • on product cards, when Card reveal is Doorway check;
  • in the quick view, with the Doorway to scale layout;
  • in the cart, with the Pocket door drawer and the Grouped list cart page: “Check my delivery” lets the shopper enter their narrowest door (60–100 cm) and every line shows whether it passes straight, only tilted, or needs a wider door.

The verdict is indicative, uses only the declared measurements and needs at least two of them.

6.3 Quick view and quick add

Quick view for products with options opens photos, videos and 3D models, options, measurements and add to cart in a panel; without JavaScript it opens the product page. Quick view layout: Doorway to scale with a 203 cm rule, Panel hanging from the header, Bottom sheet that walks through neighbouring products, Full-screen viewing room (with an optional Viewing room wall image) or Panel that unfolds beside the card. Options: Quick view for products without options too, Scale view in the quick view, Spec sheet in the quick view. Quick add for products without options adds directly, with a text or compact «+» button. A product whose Personalization metafield is true always opens its page.

6.4 Card reveal

Hover, keyboard focus or the card's own button shows a second state: Doorway check, Lit photo, Settle and fan the swatches, On the wall or Stored or folded. The photo comes from the Reveal photo metafield (or the defaults described in the setting). Products without the data show nothing extra.

6.5 Drawings to scale

  • Views: Piece / In the room / Plan (Lintel): front, side and plan drawn from the variant's measurements, with dimension lines in cm or in.
  • Scale view block: the piece next to a 200 × 85 cm sofa, a 160 cm bed or a 170 cm person.
  • Occupancy plan block (Telamon): the floor a product takes, in use and stored, seen from above. A file metafield plan_in_use or plan_stored replaces the drawing.
  • Floor plan cart drawer (Telamon): every line on a 1 m grid, with a “Stored” switch for pieces that have a second set of measurements.
  • Dimension guide section with sofa, framed work or mug drawings.

These drawings use declared values only; they never decide whether a piece fits a room.

6.6 Lighting tools (Lucerna)

The Dimmer product layout fades from the unlit to the lit photo; with colour temperature and luminous flux metafields it shows them on its scale. The Lamps off / on collection switch, the Light stage and Light bands sections, the cart line strip (mounting, bulb, light colour, power, flux) and the cart's light balance (sums of declared values) use the lighting spec sheet keys installation, bulb, light_color, power and luminous_flux in your dimensions namespace.

6.7 Filters and sorting

Filters come from Shopify's Search & Discovery app; the theme shows only the filters Shopify returns. Five layouts are available (see 5.2), each with its own panel on phones and working without JavaScript. The product type filter can be shown as Typologies (tabs, tree, chips, shape pictograms, alphabetical line). Grid / comparison list shows a sortable list of products, including in-use and stored measurements where at least two rows have them.

With Show suggestions while typing, the search panel suggests products, collections, pages, articles and search terms as the shopper types, in the chosen Search layout. Before anything is typed it can show a shortcuts menu, popular searches and featured products.

6.9 Recently viewed

The Recently viewed section lists the products the shopper has opened, stored in their browser only. It can be added to product, collection, home, page, search and cart templates.

6.10 Product page tools

  • Order a sample: a variant of a samples product named by a variant metafield with the key sample (set the samples product to Unlisted).
  • Estimated delivery: business days from the variant or product metafields custom.delivery_days_min and custom.delivery_days_max, or the block defaults, always labelled as an estimate; a money metafield custom.delivery_cost adds the cost.
  • Disclosures: the warnings entered in the product's standard Disclosures field.
  • Ask about this product: Shopify's contact form with the product and variant already in the message.
  • About the maker: a metaobject reference (custom.maker by default) with name, role, image, bio and collection.
  • Meter: a value from a number, rating, dimension, volume or weight metafield on a ruler, bar, dots, line or segments.
  • Pre-orders and try before you buy: purchase options partly paid later show what is paid at checkout and what is left.
  • Rating: stars and rating count from the reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count metafields kept by your product reviews app.

6.11 Languages

The theme includes storefront and editor translations in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

7. FAQ and troubleshooting

Measurements do not show on products. Check that the metafield definitions exist (Settings › Custom data), that their type is Dimension and that the namespace and keys in Theme settings › Dimensions and finishes match. Values are read from the variant first, then the product. A number without a unit is shown with a “unit not specified” note and is not converted.

The doorway check does not appear on a card. The product needs at least two measurements, and Card reveal must be Doorway check. In the cart, “Check my delivery” appears only with the Pocket door drawer or the Grouped list cart page.

Swatches show names only. Set swatches (colour or image) on the product option values in Shopify, and keep Show finish swatches on.

Filters are missing on collection pages. Enable Enable filtering in the Collection section and set up the filters in the Search & Discovery app. The product type filter is needed for typologies.

Complementary products are empty. Choose complementary products in the Search & Discovery app, or set Collection when there are no recommendations.

There is no discount code field in the cart. Discount codes are entered at checkout. Applied and automatic discounts are shown in the cart.

The free shipping bar is not shown. Enter Free shipping threshold without symbols. The bar is hidden when the cart is in another currency.

The dark mode switch does not appear. Set Dark mode to Follow the device, with a switch and check Switch position.

Nothing animates. The shopper's device may ask for reduced motion, or Reveal sections while scrolling is off.

The country and language selectors are missing. They appear only when Shopify Markets offers more than one country or language.

Testimonials and press logos show example texts. Replace them with real quotes and logos before publishing.
